Wobby Wonderland – Sunday 29 September in collaboration with Murf/Murw Festival

September 3, 2024

✏️ Illustrations by Keanu Schipper // ✏️ Graphic Identity by Noa Zuidervaart

Wobby Wonderland is a DIY publishing & printed matter fair, where independent publishers, artists and collectives sell their publications, zines, art prints and other printed matter.

The 5th edition of our cozy fair will take place in collaboration with and during Murf/Murw Festival, interdisciplinary festival for experimental art. The location is Hall of Fame Tilburg, close to the central station. Besides showcasing many international publishers at the book fair, Wobby Wonderland will also offer a free program.

🎉 During Wobby Wonderland we are launching Wobby #39, which is co-curated by FOULPLAY/SOMETIMESBAKERY, with curator and artist Caz Egelie. It's theme is Local Liar (Lokale leugenaar) – a title taken from the name local newspapers have gotten in the vernacular. Fables, neighbourhood myths, news facts, and ads tumble over each other, all trying to convince the reader of their truth.

During Wobby Wonderland, you can meet some of the featured artists of Wobby #39: co-curator Caz Egelie will give a presentation about their work. Janek Koza will give a cartoon making workshop, and  Nina van de Ven will talk about her work.

TALKS // Large rehearsal room

⏰ 12:30 - Mika Schalks about his Wobby Workout
In early 2023 we invited graphic designer and illustrator Mika Schalks (NL) to work at our studio. During this residency, he continued his graduation work about the queerness of television. The channels he created for that work inspired him to dive deeper into the characters themselves, especially the lady in green.

⏰ 13:30 - Nina van de Ven about her sketchbooks and recent work period at the EKWC Oisterwijk // presentation in Dutch
📷 by Heleen Anna

Nina van de Ven talks about her sketch- and scrapbooks and the central role they play in the creation of her work. She explains how the work that emerges from them can be traced back to these books, where everything is collected. Her work primarily consists of drawings, and she has recently started working with ceramics.

⏰ 14:30: Caz Egelie about their work and the new Wobby #39 - Local Liar
📷 by Robin de Puy

Caz Egelie is a Dutch artist that creates installations, performances, two-dimensional works and videos. They are also part of the artist collective FOULPLAY/SOMETIMESBAKERY, which co-curated the new Wobby #39 - Local Liar.

WORKSHOPS // FOYER

⏰ 12:30 - Button workshop by Jeroen Funke
Jeroen Funke is a Dutch comic artist and illustrator known for his playful and imaginative works. He enjoys experimenting with different art styles, often combining playful illustrations with bright colors and mixed media techniques. At Wobby Wonderland, he’ll kick off the day with a workshop where he’ll teach you how to create your own custom buttons.

⏰ 14:00 - Cartoon-drawing workshop by Janek Koza
Janek Koza (PL/NL) is the author of more than hundred animations and animated video clips, several graphic novels and thousands of political cartoons. In Janek's works, one will also find here the skilful and synthetic presentation of everyday scenes, as well as his ironic, ridiculing style. At Wobby Wonderland he will be teaching you ‘How to make funny cartoons serious’, an aspect he often incorporates into his own work.

⏰ 15:30 - Launch Wobby #39 with a performance by Benjamin Pompe

To celebrate the launch of Wobby #39 - Local Liar, Benjamin Pompe will perform a piece by Caz Egelie, co-curator of Wobby #39. Local legends and (fictional) stories will come to life in a dynamic, bard-like performance. Following this, Marjolein Schalk and Caz Egelie will officially kick off the new Wobby issue,

⏰ 17:00 - DIY sketch-/notebook workshop by Studio Misprint
Ellis Tolsma is an illustrator and motion designer from Utrecht (NL). Here, she also runs her own small risograph studio, Studio Misprint, to share to joy of riso-printing with the world. At Wobby Wonderland, she’ll be teaching you how to make your own sketch-/notebooks, decorated with Risograph testprints.
