At the initiative of Wobby, three artists did a residency at Landpark Assisië, a residential facility for people with intellectual disabilities. During the upcoming Festival Nabij (Biezenmortel) these artists will be exhibiting the works they created as a result of their residency. Various activities will be hosted this weekend, free for the public to participate.
Katrein Breukers was inspired by archival objects such as candle holders and chalices previously used in the church on the grounds of Landpark Assisië when it functioned as a monastery. Working closely together with the participants of the daytime activities of De Sam was the main goal of the workshop. Based on her residency, Katrein created five tapestries in which collages of the working process, the environment and the archive all come together. The tapestries show how a place can change and the way symbols move along with it.
During the festival, you can make a clay candle holder with Katrein. All of these candle holders will be brought together in a temporary altar, where you can also light a candle. This act of lighting a candle refers to church rituals, but is at the same time simple and everyday.
Nina van de Ven will host a free sidewalk chalk-drawing workshop, where participants will collaboratively create large-scale fantasy creatures. Tommy Smits will host interviews, and his short film ‘Frans van As en zijn maten‘ will be screened in the pop-up cinema.
