“No Signal” by Mika Schalks (NL)

New publication by Mika Schalks, which he produced during Wobby Workout in 2023, a work period at the Wobby-studio. During this residency, he continued his graduation work about the queerness of television. The channels he created for that work inspired him to dive deeper into the characters themselves, especially the lady in green.

In a risoprinted TV guide (read: comic) and a few short animation clips, he explores a fictional story of the lonely existence of the lady in green, leading perhaps the last television channel on earth. While stuck in her daily rhythm, running the TV studio all by herself, one day she gets a blue letter that reveals something she had forgotten over the years: someone was actually watching her on TV.

Mika Schalks is a visual artist from the Netherlands, working as a graphic designer and illustrator both in real life and for film and stop-motion animation. Their practice is focused on designing colourful worlds, combining analog and digital media in both print and animation. In their artistic practice they aim to make difficult subjects easier to understand with bold visuals and a weakness for kitsch aesthetics. Mika works as a prop designer at stop-motion studio Holy Motion in Arnhem and is currently working as graphic designer for illustration magazine Wobby.
